Kenya Railways Extends Commuter Train Services Between Syokimau and Nairobi CBD

Kenya Railways has announced its plans to extend its commuter train services between Syokimau and Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) in a move to enhance public transport, reduce congestion and improve the daily commuting experience for thousands of city residents.

The expanded timetable introduces additional morning and evening trips to easily accommodate the increasing number of passengers travelling between the Nairobi Metropolitan area and the city center. The move is expected to provide commuters with more flexible travel options while reducing travel time and transport costs along the heavily congested Mombasa Road corridor.

Speaking during the announcement, Kenya Railways officials said the extension is part of the corporation’s ongoing efforts to modernize the commuter rail network and promote rail transport as a safe, efficient, affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to road transport.

The management noted that the increased frequency of services is expected to ease overcrowding during peak hours and encourage more residents to embrace public transport as Nairobi continues to experience rapid urban growth.

Kenya Railways also announced its plans to construct a new railway stop to serve both Nyayo National Stadium and the proposed Talanta Stadium. The new station is expected to play a key role in facilitating movement of spectators, athletes, and officials during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

According to Kenya Railways, integrating the railway network with the country’s major sporting facilities will not only improve accessibility while reducing pressure on road transport during major international events but also continue serving the public long after the tournament, making it part of Nairobi’s expanding commuter rail system.

The extension of the train services and the planned stadium railway stop form part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen urban mobility. This will result in a more developed transport infrastructure that supports economic growth and positions Kenya as a destination that is capable of hosting major continental and global events. The projects are expected to improve connectivity, enhance commuter convenience and promote sustainable public transport across Nairobi, thus leaving a lasting legacy.
