“I never felt like giving up. Things were tough, but I was not giving up.”

For Brighton Timothy, leadership was never going to be a smooth road. There were moments of doubt, difficult decisions and situations that pushed him to his limits. But through it all, one thing remained constant: he chose to keep going.

Timothy joined the school in 2024 as a student with ambitions beyond the classroom. He wanted to become more involved in student affairs and understand what it meant to represent other students. His journey eventually led him to the office of the school president, a position that would test his patience, communication skills and ability to work with people.

Taking up the position was an exciting moment, but it also came with a reality he would soon discover. Being a student leader meant carrying the expectations of many people. Students looked to him to listen to their concerns, while the administration expected him to work within the structures of the institution.

“Leadership is tough,” Timothy says, reflecting on his experience.

For him, the title of president was never enough. It was about what he could do with the responsibility that came with it. He had to listen to different opinions, understand students’ concerns and find ways of working with both students and the administration.

There were moments when things did not go as planned. Some ideas could not be implemented in the way he had hoped, while some situations required patience before a solution could be found. At such moments, Timothy says it was important not to give up.

His journey also taught him that leadership is not about having all the answers.

Instead, it is about listening.

It is about understanding that different people have different opinions and finding a way to work with those differences. Timothy says a leader must be willing to communicate with others and work as a team because leadership cannot be achieved by one person alone.

One of the experiences that stands out for him is the responsibility of dealing with students and the administration. At times, he had to listen to complaints and concerns while also trying to understand the other side of the situation.

That position could be uncomfortable.

But it also taught him an important lesson: a leader must learn to handle pressure without losing sight of the people they represent.

Timothy admits that there were moments when leadership felt overwhelming. However, those moments became part of his growth. Instead of allowing difficult experiences to discourage him, he used them to understand leadership better.

His time as president also changed how he viewed responsibility. Before taking the position, leadership could easily appear to be about making decisions and being recognised by others. With experience, he discovered that much more happens behind the scenes.

There are conversations that students never hear. There are decisions that take time. There are situations where a leader may have to accept that not everything can be changed immediately.

For Timothy, those experiences became lessons in patience and perseverance.

He also came to understand that leadership is a shared responsibility. A president may be the person at the front, but progress depends on the people working alongside them. Cooperation, communication and mutual understanding became important parts of his leadership experience.

As his term comes to an end, Timothy is able to look back at both the achievements and the difficult moments. The journey has not been perfect, but it has given him an opportunity to grow and understand himself better.

His advice to students who may want to take up leadership is simple: do not be afraid to try.

Leadership comes with pressure, but it also comes with an opportunity to learn. He encourages aspiring leaders to work with others, listen to students and understand that being a leader does not mean being above everyone else.

It means being willing to serve.

For Timothy, his time as school president may soon become a chapter in his student life, but the lessons from that chapter are likely to remain with him long after he leaves office.

From the excitement of taking up the position to the pressure of representing others, his journey has shown him that leadership is not measured only by the title one holds.

Sometimes, it is measured by the ability to stand firm when things become difficult.

And for Timothy, when those difficult moments came, he chose not to give up.
