Voting Officially Kicks off at Ol Kalou
Voting has this morning begun in the highly anticipated Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election. Polling stations were opened from 6:00 AM across the constituency, and residents responded in big numbers, many of whom turned out early despite the cold morning weather to elect a new Member of Parliament. The contest that has attracted national political attention is expected to continue until 5:00 pm today.
The by-election comes a result of the death of former Ol Kalou MP David Njuguna Kiaraho. Nine candidates are on the ballot, although the race is widely viewed as a showdown between the ruling party, UDA, and the DCP, making it a key test of political influence in the Mt. Kenya region, ahead of the 2027 general election.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has urged voters to maintain peace, keep their ballots a secret, and rely only on official communication channels for all election updates. Security has also been heightened across the constituency as authorities oversee the voting exercise, with results expected after the polling closes and vote counting is completed later today.
