No student to be left out under new university funding model, says Education Cabinet Secretary

Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Ogamba, has reassured students that the new university funding model announced by President Ruto this week will ensure that every student, irrespective of their financial background, will receive full government funding to pursue higher education.

Ogamba highlighted that the previous funding model only served 40% of students, leaving many deserving cases out and causing financial strain on public universities. The government’s decision to change the funding model was aimed at addressing this issue and ensuring that all qualified university students have access to sponsorship.

The CS emphasized that the new funding model, which is currently being discussed in Parliament, will consolidate bursaries and scholarships into one fund to ensure no student is denied the opportunity to pursue their dreams due to financial constraints.

President Ruto’s announcement of the universal funding model comes in the wake of major underfunding of the current system, which has left universities in debt and unable to fully finance students’ education. Despite the financial challenges, the government is committed to providing adequate funding to support an increasing number of students entering universities and colleges.

The Higher Education Loans Board estimates that the upcoming intake will result in a record number of students requiring financial support, with a projected financing gap of Sh57.65 billion. However, with the new universal funding model, the government aims to bridge this gap and ensure that every student receives the necessary financial support to pursue their higher education goals.

The move towards universal funding represents a significant shift in university financing under the Kenya Kwanza administration, demonstrating a commitment to providing equal opportunities for all students regardless of their financial circumstances. The education sector looks set to undergo positive changes that will benefit a larger number of students and support the growth and development of higher education in the country.
